Buttons, quick replies, ice breakers, and the persistent menu

Four Instagram tap patterns: message buttons, quick replies, ice breakers on new chats, and the ☰ persistent menu.

Updated Sep 14, 2026

Short answer: Send Message supports up to three buttons that open a URL or continue the flow. Quick Replies are tap pills in the thread. Ice Breakers are up to four suggested questions on a new DM. The Persistent Menu is the hamburger (☰) list. Ice Breakers and Persistent Menu are Instagram-only automation types.

Taps convert better than paragraphs. Instagram gives you four official patterns — creatorDM maps each one to an automation.

1. Buttons on a message

On Send Message, add up to three buttons. A button can open a website (checkout, calendar, your link-in-bio) or jump to the next node.

Keep labels to a couple of words: Shop, Book a call, I followed.

2. Quick Replies

Quick Replies sit as pills under a message. Tapping one sends that text and continues the branch. Use them for “Tell me more / Maybe later”, not for checkout.

3. Ice Breakers

New automation → Ice Breakers. Up to four suggested questions on a new Instagram conversation (“What’s in stock?”, “Where do I watch the live?”). Going Live publishes them to that Instagram account.

4. Persistent Menu

New automation → Persistent Menu. This is the ☰ list that stays on the chat: Shop, Support, Book. Going Live writes Instagram’s persistent menu for that account.

Only one live menu and one live ice-breaker set should be published per Instagram account — the latest live automation wins.
